So here’s the story!
We are messy!
Well not really but hey, it doesn’t hurt to be careful….
I was one of those mothers who made sure my kids were wearing bibs when they were small and there was always a moist cloth nearby, to wipe greasy, sauced up hands and faces.
But that’s not really why I love aprons so much.
I have a bit of an attraction to beautiful fabric. Now, I am not talking about the finest silk and the softest wool from the regions beyond. I am talking, the local Fabricland or discount fabrics.
Cotton! When I walk up and down the aisles at those places and see the colour combinations and the patterns, well, I feel like smiling. Looking at the beauty makes me happy.
When I was a wee lass, My mother (you know, Nano) would produce loveliness in the form of dresses made from inexpensive yet beautifully coloured fabric. None of the blacks and brown we see so much of today. No sirree!
Nano was and still is all about colour. Beautiful, God created, rainbow variations of colour.
Those flowered, cotton , drop wasted, fabric button days are over, but I still adore fabric.
A few years back Nano started a new hobby. Apron Making. Just one or two, in her spare time. But then we started to get excited about which fabric she would choose next. And then I started to pick out my own apron fabric and then I started to stack those beautiful creations in my cupboard and then I thought it would be a great idea to keep them on hand for gifts.
And then, people started asking if maybe Nano would like to sell some of her aprons, which she did not want to do. She was doing the sewing of aprons out of sheer joy. Love of the task. Pleasure in the accomplishment of seeing those aprons pile up. Yet another gift idea for her “gift cupboard”. Nano’s love language is gift giving. Nothing expensive or extravagant but, from the heart items. More often than not, from the sewing room or the kitchen. Made with love. The best kind.
Nano has always had one hand on a stirring utensil in her kitchen and one foot on the pedal of her sewing machine. If you could see the pleasure on her face when she is leaning into the sewing machine, you would understand that fabric and creating are in her blood.
Those happy, fabric days are coming to a close for our dear matriarch. She is tired!
But guess what!
She has passed the baton to me
I am picking up the mantle
This week I have been here, at my sister’s house, with our mother and I have been sewing!
Aprons…
Check out APRON MARKET!
Well Pam, I hope you will understand why I may be more excited about a well tuned engine or a good set of mag wheels than aprons but I am happy that you have taken on the task of writing this blog. I hope you are enjoying it and in producing it you are helping to build a heritage that will be enjoyed by family and friends for years to come. All the best and keep going with your blog.
HAHA!
Thanks Bill! You are a kind man!
